[🏆 3rd Place at AI Week 2025 – Building AI for Social Impact at TUT]
At AI Week 2025 hosted by TUT, our team secured 3rd place in a competition focused on using AI to help reduce gender-based violence (GBV). We developed a smart wearable AI system integrated with smartwatch technology designed to provide real-time monitoring, discreet emergency alerts, and privacy-focused support for users in danger. The project demonstrated how AI can be applied for meaningful social impact by improving safety, communication, and emergency response in critical situations.
🏆 3rd Place at AI Week 2025 – Building AI for Social Impact at TUT
Introduction
I am excited to share that our team achieved 3rd place at AI Week 2025, hosted at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). This event brought together innovative minds to solve real-world challenges using artificial intelligence.
The theme for this year was:
“Leveraging AI Tools to Help Reduce Gender-Based Violence”
A powerful and deeply important challenge that required both technical innovation and social responsibility.
The Problem We Addressed
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical issue affecting communities worldwide. One of the biggest challenges is ensuring:
- Fast and discreet emergency response
- Continuous safety monitoring for vulnerable individuals
- Privacy-preserving communication during distress
- Reliable support systems in real time
Our goal was to design a solution that could provide immediate assistance while respecting user privacy and safety.
Our Solution
We developed a smart AI-powered wearable system integrated with smartwatch technology.
The system focuses on:
- Real-time monitoring of the user’s condition
- Discreet emergency alert triggers
- AI-assisted decision-making for safety responses
- Communication with trusted contacts or support systems
- Location-aware assistance during emergencies
The idea was to create a silent guardian system that can operate without drawing attention from a potential threat.
Key Features
- 🚨 Real-time emergency alert system
- 🧠 AI-assisted risk detection and response
- ⌚ Smartwatch integration for wearable safety
- 🔒 Privacy-focused communication design
- 📍 Location-aware alert sharing
- 🤝 Community and contact notification system
Impact of the Project
This project demonstrated how AI can move beyond automation and efficiency into real human impact.
It highlighted how technology can:
- Support vulnerable individuals
- Improve emergency response times
- Strengthen community safety networks
- Promote ethical and responsible AI usage
